Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Does anyone remember the clock in the pavement?? It was put 'in' the pavement outside a jewellers I think, at the top of Castle Hill. I can't remember seeing it when using a cashpoint there a few...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Perhaps the sunny weather, together with the higher temperatures we've experienced of late, (which for a long time we've become unused to!), may be the reason the condensation problem has reared its...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Mmmm. The granite setts are a good idea, I suppose, although a bit chunky beside a clock face, but as an amateur looking on... Is that good 'pointing'? Looks rather uneven to me. Fairly smooth on the...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Maybe the job isn't finished??

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

It must be. You certainly couldn't add any more mortar, a thin skim would fall out, just like it did before.

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Maybe age has dimmed my memory, but I don't recall there being so many problems with condensation or pointing 40+ years ago when I was growing up in Windsor. IMHO, the granite setts look out of place...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

My mother was born in Windsor town and her grandfather, Robert Ward, was a clockmaker employed by Dysons. He was known as "Clockie Ward" and was responsible for winding and maintaining the clocks in...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Bindles thanks for sharing your story with us. We haven't visited Windsor for a while so I can't give you any up-to-date information about the clock or its present condition. Perhaps one of our...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

The clock, as on post #143, was certainly there last week, although the time was wrong - possibly due to the ongoing condensation problem. If it hasn't been put right already, maybe it will be, when...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Thanks, Scribe. I think your idea of the clock being adjusted when the clocks go back to G.M.T. next week is a good one. Perhaps the department dealing with the clock's maintenance might read your...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Herewith a photo of the clock in 1953. It shows the problems that were encountered throughout its life with the scratched glass. I suspect condensation was a problem then too. Obviously we have a...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

The pointing didn't last long. It looks to me as if it wasn't anywhere near deep enough.

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Maybe a case of too much sand, or, too little cement? What do the experts in our midst think? Scribe, many thanks...well-spotted.

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

The pointing's been done again, but... the clock hasn't been working for at least a fortnight - possibly since they did the pointing!

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Thanks Scribe... ...perhaps the best solution to the whole problem might be to take the clock from its present position and place it somewhere else; somewhere dry and away from damp pavements.

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

True, but then it wouldn't be The Clock In The Pavement anymore, and another little piece of history would be gone forever.

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Scribe, you are, of course, right...However, 'The Clock That Was In The Pavement' '(but is now in this wall)', would, I think, be acceptable if the clock actually worked/kept good time and attracted...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

It looks as if efforts to keep the clock going have been abandoned. It hasn't worked for months - at least, and even the clock face is at a strange angle, with twelve o'clock where two o'clock should...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

..we all emailed the council? Might that not be a good idea? Might not the shops along that section of Thames Street contribute towards the cost of repairing our clock? We desperately need a volunteer...

Re: Dysons and The Clock in the Pavement

Yes, as Geoffrey Dyson's (who owned the shop) grandson, it's very very sad it's not being looked after properly. Have aways expected to take my two boys up to Windsor when they are old enough and show...

Newbugslug, you could email the council telling them of your close connection and association with the clock in the pavement. The receipt of your email might, with fingers and toes crossed, bring...
